Map: the remotest place on earth

Mg20227041

Map infographics, you've got to love them:

"The maps are based on a model which calculated how long it would take to travel to the nearest city of 50,000 or more people by land or water. The model combines information on terrain and access to road, rail and rivernetworks. It also considers how factors like altitude, steepness of terrain and hold-ups like border crossings slow travel."

Traveling to the Tibetan plateau, the most remote place in the world will take you three weeks (20 on foot, one by car).

Also: note the bright spot called Belgium.

World map of social networks

It's time for an updated world map of social networks, also known as "find that country where Facebook does not dominate yet". There's still a number of them, but compared to last time (six months ago) that number is clearly dropping.

Map: distance to the nearest US McDonald’s

Mcd_us_high

"Between the tiny Dakotan hamlets of Meadow and Glad Valley lies the McFarthest Spot: 107 miles distant from the nearest McDonald’s, as the crow flies, and 145 miles by car! Suffer a Big Mac Attack out there, and you’re hurtin’ for certain!"
