It all comes down to two simple facts: email is based on open standards, and it's the lowest common denominator for Internet communication. Any communication system that wishes to supplant email will need to offer both openness and ubiquity, and nothing available today comes even close.
In fact, only 9% of respondents were least likely to give up social networks for a week. Compare that against email and text messaging, each of which saw 26% of respondents unwilling to give it up, and you have an interesting conundrum to think about: social networks seem more expendable to Gen Y.
